The Eastern diamondback is the largest rattlesnake in the world. Although outlandish stories exaggerating the size of this snake are often told, here are the facts: adults are 4-5 feet in length. Large snakes can reach lengths up to 8 feet, but more typical maxing out at 6 feet. Newborn snakes are 12-15 inches long. An average adult diamondback weighs 4-5 pounds. A real giant may tip the scales at 10 pounds and can weigh up to 15lbs! I currently own a adult female weighing 11 pounds.

The 2008 season brings more excitement than last year because I will finally produce Patternless and possibly Amelanistic Patternless. This project has taken a long time to get here and finally I have a confirmed copulation. The picture below is a Partial Patternless female (het for amel.) breeding with a Het (Patternless and Amel). The male is around 5.5′ - 6′ and the female right around 4′.

Once breeding begins, the snakes ignore distractions and go into a state of trance. The male will jerk his head back and forth along the females back. He also makes a waving motion with his body, along the females back, caressing her. Snakes are very passionate when breeding. Courtship is also very important, if not successful, the female will not allow reproduction.

The following pictures are from my good friend Heyward Clamp. Heyward, Ted, and David Weathers were out cottonmouth hunting when this chaos took place. Picture #1 : shows David finding the snake and tossing it onto the bank.

Picture #2 : The cottonmouth slung over and onto the chest of Ted Clamp unknowingly.

And picture #3 : showing David realizing Ted is next to him and that the the snake hit Ted on his chest. Ted is shocked and grinning at the same time. I imagine his actual thoughts! David as you see is cracking up.
